A compensatory uptake of water will be calculated if a deficiency occurs because of too high water tensions in some layers in the soil profile simultaneously as the water tension is below the critical threshold in other layers. The degree of compensation is governed by this parameter. A value of unity will cause total compensation, which means that water will be extracted at the potential rate from the soil until all layers within the root zone reach the critical threshold for reduction of potential water uptake, ψc.
